Overwhelmed by all the videos? The media literacy summit summarised...

Sat, 2007-11-10 18:26Tim Davies
I realise the wealth of video captured on the day at the Digital Media Literacy Summit can look a little overwhelming here. With many minutes of interviews and vox pops shared, there is a lot of information to digest.

I've put together a summary of all the video content I was able to capture, along with links to some of the MediaSnackers clips, in a blog post over here.

Whether you were at the event and want a reminder of the key points from the speakers or you couldn't make it and want to tap into some of the ideas and reflections shared on the day - I would recomend making use of the videos captured.

Follow this link to read the summary.

A right to the components of media literacy

Thu, 2007-11-08 09:55Tim Davies

In thinking about media literacy it's worth taking a look at Article 13 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This fundamental document should underpin all our policy towards children and young people in the United Kingdom (and indeed, globally).

Learning Manager at the National Media Museum

I have been Learning Manager at the National Media Museum (formerly the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television) since 1995. Our work, providing an inspiring and engaging array of media related learning programmes for all audiences, is underpinned by the three core media literacy aspects: access to media, undertsanding of the media and media production. All of our galleries, exhibitions, events and activities address one or more of the media literacy aims. We reach 650000 visitors annually - and 80000 of those engage directly with learning related activities. We work in partnership with the University of Bradford and co-teach modules for students engaged in over 16 different media related degree paths. We also work with the Football Foundation who fund a Youth Media TV project in which we engage directly with socially and educationally disadvantaged young people and teach them how to make football based tv programmes.

Working for a Media Literate UK

The extraordinary changes taking place in how we create, consume and talk about media content requires the whole industry, policy makers and educators to think afresh about how we can ensure that the public is able to access the social skills, experiences and cultural competencies to fully participate in and make sense of a landscape that is characterised by a ceaseless riptide of innovation.
