Spent a lifetime in education becoming the Senior professional adviser on education to the Government and the head of Her Majesty's Inspectorate [HMI] in England and Wales. After retring from that in 1991 became professor for Teacher education at the University of London's Institute of Education. Also served as a Nolan Commissioner and as the Deputy Chair of the New Opportunities Lottery Fund and for some years chaired the ITAs Education Committee. Within education as teacher and inspector specially interested in the teaching of English and the arts.

Interests

music, theatre, opera, film, arts education, education in and through the arts. Reading, travel and fishing, family - children and grandchildren.
